Great show, packed with interesting and funny stuff! First, I agree about the conflating of GMO with the horrible corporations that tend to promote it. I think that genetics is one of those areas that intellectual property laws should not apply, even if it was just to get douches like Monsato out of the GMO game (along with other areas of genetics research). Plus, I don’t want GSK ‘accidentally’ owning part of my genome….
One thing that was brought up (mostly in passing, but I’m gonna make a bigger deal of it) was how much of a scamming fraud Alex Jones is (sounds so Welsh BTW). Anyhow, it kinda reminded me of one of the [many] themes is Robert Anton Wilson and Robert Shea’s ‘Illuminatus!’ (a book that the New Hackers Dictionary [apparently] describes as “An incredible berserko-surrealist rollercoaster of world-girdling conspiracies, intelligent dolphins, the fall of Atlantis, who really killed JFK, sex, drugs, rock’n’roll, and the Cosmic Giggle Factor. […] The perfect right-brain companion to Hofstadter’s Gödel, Escher, Bach.”). There’s a character called Dr. Horace Naismith who doesn’t play a big part, but pops up every now and then as the man behind different societies. There’s the John Dillinger Died For You society, WHORE (White summink Opposed to Red Extermism or something, I forget..), and my favourite, the Colossus of Yorba Linda Foundation; a fund collecting money to erect a huge statue of Richard Nixon. WTF has this to do with Alex Jones? Well, all of these societies etc. are all just money spinners, most of which are just premium-line numbers that get through to a rant-of-the-week recording. There’s no statue for Nixon, he’s just conning them! Anyhow, I was wondering if any of those other kooks had read the book and decided they should try that, or if Wilson and Shea were simply spot-on with recognising certain human behaviour. Read the book too if you haven’t – it’s awesome! And has lots of sex in… Lots of drugs too….
